Two days ago, Sam Altman stood in front of cameras promising "the best model in the world" and called GPT-5 a "significant step toward AGI." What we actually got was one of the most embarrassing product launches in recent memory, complete with hilariously broken charts, a routing system so busted it made the new model seem dumber than its predecessor, and user backlash so intense that OpenAI had to bring back GPT-4o within 24 hours.
I've been following AI development obsessively since ChatGPT dropped, and I've seen plenty of overhyped releases. But GPT-5 feels different. This isn't just another disappointing launch—it's a window into how desperate OpenAI has become to maintain their exponential progress narrative when the actual improvements are marginal at best.
The most embarrassing part was the charts. During the livestream, OpenAI presented graphs so misleading they instantly became a Twitter meme called "chart crime." One showed GPT-5 with a 50% deception rate versus o3's 47.4% (basically identical numbers) but made o3's bar dramatically larger to make GPT-5 look superior. Users flooded Reddit complaining that GPT-5 felt "dumber" than GPT-4o. So the supposedly smartest model ever built was randomly routing queries to whatever happened to be working, making it appear less capable than its predecessor. When your big innovation is broken automation that makes your product worse, you might be trying too hard.
The routing disaster reveals something deeper about what GPT-5 actually is: a cost optimization exercise disguised as a capability breakthrough. The "unified" model isn't about improving user experience. It's about cutting OpenAI's compute bills by routing most queries to cheaper, smaller models while maintaining the illusion users are getting premium AI.
This becomes obvious when you look at the context window situation. The API version of GPT-5 handles 400,000 tokens, but ChatGPT users get a fraction of that. Free users dropped from 32,000 tokens to just 8,000. Plus users went from 128,000 to 32,000. Meanwhile, Claude gives everyone 200,000 tokens and Gemini provides a million. OpenAI literally made the experience worse for most users while claiming to offer the "best model in the world."
The user reaction has been brutal. People describe GPT-5 as feeling "corporate" and "sanitized," more like talking to a customer service bot than an AI. The backlash was so intense that users lobbied during the AMA to permanently bring back GPT-4o, and Altman had to promise they were "looking into" it. When your product launch requires immediately offering access to the previous version, something has gone fundamentally wrong.
Throughout this disaster, Altman's ego has been on full display. His grandiose claims about GPT-5 being "unimaginable at any previous time in history" ring hollow when the actual product struggles with basic routing decisions. His recent podcast appearances where he talks about feeling "useless" compared to GPT-5 read like performance art rather than genuine reflection on what the technology actually delivers.
The prediction markets noticed. Despite all the hype, Google has now overtaken OpenAI in bets about which company will have the best model by the end of August. The AI community's confidence in OpenAI's trajectory is clearly shaking.
For someone my age entering college as AI supposedly reshapes everything, GPT-5's launch is a sobering reminder that most AI progress is incremental, expensive, and often oversold. The companies building these systems are under enormous pressure to maintain growth narratives that may not reflect technical reality.
Strip away the marketing speak and GPT-5's actual innovation becomes clear: it's algorithmic penny-pinching disguised as user experience optimization. The router isn't about convenience. It's about cost management. The context window cuts aren't about quality. They're about economics. Even the safety improvements serve a financial purpose by reducing human oversight requirements.
This explains why GPT-5's pricing is "aggressively competitive." OpenAI can undercut competitors because users aren't actually running their most expensive model for most queries. It's a race to the bottom disguised as a race to the top.
GPT-5 won't be remembered for its technical achievements. It'll be remembered as the moment one of AI's most important companies chose marketing over honesty, cost-cutting over capability, and ego over evidence. In trying to prove they were still ahead of the curve, OpenAI may have revealed they're actually behind it.
